Atal Tunnel:-
The Rohtang Tunnel Central Government named the tunnel "Atal Tunnel" to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 95th birth anniversary in December last year.
Announcing it at a function, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Rohtang Tunnel connecting Manali to Leh will now be known as Atal Tunnel.
Atal Tunnel

Rohtang Tunnel is an under construction tunnel which is being constructed under Rohtang Pass on Manali Leh Highway. This tunnel is shaped like a horseshoe.

For the first time in 1860, the Moravian Mission talked about the possibility of a tunnel to reach Lahaul via the Rohtang Pass. After about 139 years, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the Prime Minister, he insisted on building the Rohtang tunnel.

On 3 June 2000, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Bajpai announced that the Rohtang tunnel would be constructed. The feasibility for construction of a tunnel at Rohtang Pass was studied by RITES.
The historic decision to build a tunnel of strategic importance under the Rohtang Pass was taken on 3 June 2000 when Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of the country. The foundation stone of the road connecting the southern part of Sunang was laid on 26 May 2002. A total of 8.8 kilometers, this tunnel is the longest tunnel in the world built at an altitude of 3000 meters.

Spending on the construction of the Atal tunnel
About Rs 4,000 crore will be spent on the construction of the Atal tunnel. The construction cost of the tunnel was estimated to be around Rs 1400 crore in the initial phase. The construction of the Atal tunnel was delayed by about five years due to the leakage of water from the Seri river, located just above the Atal tunnel.

Advantages of Atal Tunnel
The Border Roads Organization (BRO) is constructing the Atal tunnel and the construction work will be completed by the year 2020. On completion of the Atal Tunnel, all weather connectivity will remain in remote areas of Lahaul and Spiti Valley. This will also reduce the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 kilometers.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the Atal tunnel is 8.8 kilometers long. It is the longest tunnel in the world built at an altitude of about 3,000 meters. The construction of the Atal tunnel is nearing completion soon. Earlier, in the cold weather, contact of these areas with other parts of the country was completely destroyed for six months.

State-of-the-art and longest traffic tunnel
The Border Roads Organization (BRO) is constructing this 8.8 km long tunnel being constructed at a cost of 4000 crores. This tunnel is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and facilities. The tunnel uses various technologies including CCTV cameras, light saving sensor systems, sensors to prevent pollution, wind turbines to maintain oxygen levels, systems to prevent fire accidents. Two tunnels have been built in the Atal tunnel. In case of obstacles like an accident in one tunnel, another tunnel can be used. The second tunnel is also 8.8 km long like the main tunnel. Several routes have been made to divert traffic from the main tunnel to another tunnel.

Indira Gandhi made the plan to keep the Manali Leh route operational in all seasons. But its construction was announced in 2002 by then Prime Minister Atal

13 Surrounded by Dangerous Avalanche Areas: Due to the presence of about 13 dangerous avalanche areas around the Surang, construction difficulties can be estimated. With the help of new Australian technology of dirrel and explosions in the construction of the tunnel, 14 million money meters of clay and stones were extracted. In its construction, 14,507 tonnes of iron and 2,34,549 tonnes of cement have been used.

USP: -
Built at an altitude of 10,171 feet, this Atal Rohtang Tunnel is built by connecting it to Rohtang Pass, it is the highest and longest road tunnel in the world.
It is about 8.8 kilometers long and is 10 meters wide.
The distance from Manali to Leh was reduced by 46 kilometers, now you can complete this distance in just 10 minutes.
This tunnel will not only connect Manali to Leh but will also ease traffic in Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh. It will also connect Lahul-Spiti district with Manali in Kullu district.
The most advantage of this tunnel will be to the Indian troops stationed in Ladakh because it will be able to easily supply arms and logistics even in winter, now not only Zojila pass but this route will also supply goods to the troops.
Any vehicle inside this tunnel will be able to run at a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour.
This tunnel is built in such a way that 3000 cars or 1500 trucks can be simultaneously discharged inside it.
It has cost about 4 thousand crores rupees to make it. State-of-the-art Australian tunneling methods have been used inside the tunnel. The ventilation system is also based on Australian technology.
DRDO has also helped in designing this tunnel so that it is not affected by snow and avalanche.
This tunnel will be equipped with CCTV cameras which will help in controlling speed and accidents.
A fire hydrant has been arranged every 200 meters inside the tunnel, so that control can be found in case of fire.
it was started on 28th June 2010. It has been built by the Border Road Organization (BRO). This tunnel is built in the shape of a horseshoe. Engineers and employees of BRO have prepared this tunnel with hard work. Actually it used to be very difficult to work here in winter, the temperature here used to go up to minus 30 degrees. During the construction of this tunnel, 8 lakh cubic meters of stone and soil were extracted. In summer, it was excavated at five meters per day, but in winter it was reduced to half a meter.
